Press Releases
Alan Burns 1940-2011
29 December 2011
We are saddened to announce the death of Alan Burns, President
and Founder of Bahamas Petroleum Company and former Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer. Alan passed away peacefully on the
evening of Tuesday 28th December 2011 following a year-long fight
against illness.
In so many ways Alan was a true pioneer. Whilst self-taught, he
managed successful resources enterprises into new geographies where
few had been before and was dedicated to constantly innovating
technical solutions - many with an enviable track record of
commercial success and recognition through a series of
international awards.
Alan's professional life began in 1960 as a Cadet Surveyor
within the Western Australia Lands and Surveys Department, but his
curiosity, insight and entrepreneurial spirit over the next 50
years led to the development of a series of both family and public
businesses that spanned from mining to clean water production; from
munitions to the automotive industry and from oil exploration and
production to green energy solutions. Alan was a director of, and
investor in, new ventures that successfully brought capital and
development to many countries where little had been previously
expended.
Those who have worked with or been associated with Alan over the
years cannot have helped but be affected by his dry humour,
generosity and imagination. Each will have their own memories, but
along with many other individuals and enterprises, the directors
and staff of Bahamas Petroleum Company would like to pay tribute to
Alan, for without the application of the full wealth of his
experience and personality we would not be where we are today.
Our thoughts are with his wife Pam, and his family at this
time.
